Lots of great facts that are easily digestible for young marine biologists. From my 5yo nature lover: "There are a lot of different animals inside and they're really cool. You know sharks are fish, right? The whale shark is HUGE! I think it could swallow a car, but it wouldn't because it only eats tiny animals. And the penguins are really really weird because their poop is pink! It's really crazy! I love the pictures - I want to give the blowfish on the cover a little kiss he's so cute." - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shilpa Mondkar -- The porcupine puffer fish on the cover is adorable! : They say don't judge a book by it's cover but this one is wonderful inside and out. I got this book to have in my classroom library. It is perfect for ages 3-6 and aligns with many of the Montessori Science/Zoology learning objectives for that age group. I really like how Ginjer L. Clarke has highlighted some of the unusual vocabulary such as Coral reef, Marine, Invertebrate etc. in a different color. She has also included definitions of the words in the Glossary. The fun Trivia such as " The giant Pacific octopus has three hearts, nine brains, and blue blood" is super cool and promotes children's inquisitive nature. I wonder why the octopus has 9 brains?? Peterson -- Inspires curiosity on each and every page : After months of great anticipation the publisher provided us with an advance copy of Ginger Clarke’s newest book My First Book of Ocean Animals that we gladly added to our Clarke collection. It did not disappoint. Ginjer has a unique writing ability that captures children’s attention and interest. She inspires curiosity on each and every page by sharing facts they can relate to such as size (they are “as small as your fingernail” or “as big as a school bus”), food they enjoy (they eat “slimy algae”), a brief description of wildlife habitat and beautiful photographs that encourage page turning to discover even more. One favorite marine animal we read about were dolphins since we just saw several pods of them swimming in the wild. Dolphins are fast swimmers who love to play, eat fish and shellfish, sleep half awake, can live to be 60 years old, are smart and social. In a box the book tells you the type of the ocean animal, habitat, which ocean it lives in, the food it eats, its lifespan, size, and weight. Due to its length and depth it is a book that can be read over the over either in its totality or in chunks. We have been picking a few pages to focus on per night. We have enjoyed learning new things and using it as a jumping off point to talk about other facts we may know about the animal or similar ones. Fun reading! My grandchildren learned so many brilliant facts about ocean animals from My First Book of Ocean Animals: All About Marine Wildlife for Kids. They were especially thrilled to learn about why the rocks that Adelie Penguins live on are pink, how many years many ocean animals live, and that the size of a jellyfish can range from 1 inch to 120 feet! The detailed and cool facts about the many ocean animals in this book are perfect for my grandchildren who are 2 and 4. It's a hit and will be read many times!! We have read a few pages each night and the fun facts are great tidbits for her to take and share at preschool. I also learned about the eternal jellyfish! Who knew?! The text is easy for preschoolers to understand but advanced enough that slightly older kids could read it independently. I look forward to reading other books by this author to my daughter.
